Art’s energy is most beautiful in its struggle against itself; a battle Duane Michals has been fighting with his art for 45 years. His desire to go beyond the camera’s possibilities, to capture an image that alters the reality we expect in a photo, has produced a lifetime of extraordinary work. He uses light, multiple exposures, paint and at times, captions and text to physically alter his images, giving a fresh perspective on complex topics of sex, beauty, death and religion. His experiments keep his work current, and at the age of 81 keep him at the forefront of artistic innovation and discovery.
Michals’ work speaks for itself, but for a more in-depth look at the artist, check out this article in Art News.
